8th HANDS-ON COURSE
domingo, febrero 9, 2014, 02:08 AMThe 8th Hands-on Course on Neurosurgical Approaches took place in Valencia, Spain, from 16-20 June 2014. The Course attracted a total of 24 participants from several European countries.
The scientific content of the program addressed the Surgical Approaches for the Skull Base and it was divided into nine distinct sessions aside a special one devoted to the Midas Rex Course sponsored by Medtronic. The scientific sessions completed a round around the skull base approaches from the pterional area to the foramen magnum.
Dr. Ossama Al-Mefty presented the orbitozygomatic approach as well as the anterior and posterior petrosal, with anatomical demonstrations, and lectures showing complex cases of skull base meningiomas resected using those approaches.
Dr. Evandro de Oliveira presented the pterional and the far-lateral approaches, also with anatomical demonstrations and lectures showing complex cases of vascular pathology.
Dr. José González-Darder presented a lecture about the access to the middle cranial fossa pathology through the pterional transzygomatic approach. Dr. Vicent Quilis-Quesada completed the faculty of the Course carrying out the pterional approach demonstration and participating in almost all other approaches.
The 8th Hands-on Course included by the first time into the series of hands-on courses in Spain a 3D exhibition of the anatomical demonstrations done by the faculty. For this purpose a Trenion 3D HD Zeiss Pentero microscope was used for microsurgery and a 3D camera for standard macrosurgical procedures. The participants followed the approaches by three big size television screens wearing special glasses. Also by the first time all the cadaveric specimens were injected both in red and blue latex colors for the arterial and venous systems.
